Milk storage ideas with Brother Aitcheson

“Powdered milk is a manufactured dairy product made by evaporating milk to dryness. One purpose of drying milk is to preserve it; milk powder has a far longer shelf life than liquid milk and does not need to be refrigerated, due to its low moisture content.

Another purpose is to reduce its bulk” 1 which makes it easy to store.

Ideas here come from members who have experience in storing milk.

Milk powder used to taste different. Now you really can’t tell the difference.

After our stake conference welfare exibit, several sisters have quietly refilled their fresh milk containers with home-mixed milk. And their husbands and children are not noticing. The secret is in the Richard and Carie Aitcheson mix.

Here’s how to do it.

How To Store Milk

If the way in which you manage your Food Storage is convenient and saves you money – it will be successful. The ‘process’ is the key to convenience. If it’s not working for you, re-think the way in which you do it.

Equipment

Hand whisk
Scales
Glass Ocean Spray bottle
Measuring thimble
Ice cube Tray (optional)

Ingredients

I00g Non-fat Milk powder 0.1% fat
30ml (10.5g Fat) Cream
1 liter of water

Instructions

Mix 100g of non-fat milk powder in the water. Stir till dissolved. Add the cream. Stir again briefly before pouring into bottle and storing in the fridge.

Milk Secrets

1. Store non-fat milk powder. It stores much longer than regular milk powder.
2. Choose milk powder packets with as little packet air as possible. This will increase storage life.
3. Don’t use an electric whisk as the higher speeds create a head on the milk.
4. For larger families have four or five glass bottles available for rotation and maintaining milk supply.
5. Cream storage: Most families will use a 300ml bottle of cream in a week or two. So you can pour straight from the fridge. Longer term storage can be achieved by freezing in ice cubes trays and storing in a separate ice-cream container.
6. Thawing: As the freezing process tends to separate the fat and water molecules, once thawed stir the cream till smooth again.
7. Note this is non-homogenised milk.
8. For best results use filtered water and chill.

This method means you can store milk, it tastes like fresh milk, it costs less and you can use your non-fat milk powder from your food-storage.
